Barrow Raiders visit Greengate- March 2019!

Some of the players from Barrow’s Rugby League team came to talk to the whole school about their personal sports journey, then to work with year four on some coaching and sports skills workshops!

Smart Moves-September 2018.

Mr Rushton, one of our teaching assistants, is really trying to incorporate movement into other curriculum areas…SMART MOVES is proving to be really popular!

Pedal Your Way To Health June 2018:

Our school was involved in the launch of a new health road show put together by various sponsors, including Active Cumbria. The road show was entertaining and interactive and gave children a clear message about how to maintain their own physical health. It is also a precursor for the Tour de Britain cycle race which will be coming past our schoool and through central Barrow on 7th September 2018!

Sports Day 2017!

We had to wait for the weather to improve and finally got our sports day on Monday 17th July, 2017!

Fixtures for 2015-2016

3 November 2015
3 teams from Year 3 and 4 represented the school in this year’s Kwik sticks Hockey competition. Although we didn’t win, the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were superb representatives of our school!

12 February
Three teams from Greengate entered this year’s Key Steps Gym competition at Furness Academy.  There were some beautiful performances in both the floor routine and on the vault.

17 March 2016
It was Sport Relief once again and we like to do something a little different when it comes to raising money.  We held a ‘Skate or Scoot’ event and raised £128 for the charity.

8 June 2016
The 8 of June saw part one of our annual intra-school swimming gala.  Well done to our Year 3 and 4 children who competed in various ways of crossing a width of the pool, from frogs, to woggles, to the more traditional front crawl!

15 June 2016
Our cricket team competed in the area’s mixed cricket tournament at Furness Cricket Club.  Despite not training together for very long, and half of the team being away on trips, the team competed brilliantly and won their first game!

6 July 2016
We held our Annual Sainsbury’s School Games Sports Day.  It wasn’t our usual spectacular event since it had already been cancelled due to the weather but there was something for everybody to enjoy, all the same.

The Year 5 and 6 Gymnasts had worked hard throughout the Summer Term with our coach, Brenda Baille, to produce and perform a rousing routine for our opening ceremony.  This was then followed by all the sports day classics with every child competing in an event.  While scores were tallied and checked, Class 3SM performed an amazing dance, inspired by carnival and the upcoming Olympics, which they had worked on for the UDance Festival earlier in the year.  Scores were once again very close with only 40 points between 1st and 4th place, but it was our Green Team who came out overall winners this year!  Thank you very much to all the parents who came to watch our event.

Dare Dance Festival

23 April
Class 3SM worked hard on their contribution to the Dare Dance Festival and performed beautifully on the night in front of their audience. In fact it was so good, that we would like to use it in our Sports Day opening ceremony!

Cricket vs St George’s

After we could no longer attend the re-arranged cricket festival, we invited St George’s over for a game of cricket.  It was a close game all the way through, and with some strong batting from Finley and some accurate bowling from Jessica, Greengate eventually won by 3 runs.  Thank you to Mr Wardman and Mr Nicholson for cutting us a proper crease and to Mr Hillman for teaching Mrs Leigh some of the umpiring signals! Look on the sports board for Halle and Jessica’s sport report!

Race for Life

Today was a festival all about raising money and challenging ourselves.  And we certainly did that!  We held our Race for Life at the Furness Academy athletics track and attracted a huge crowd of spectators.  Everybody beat the target of how far they were expected to run and some children ran further than they had ever run before.  Dong Energy provided us with bottled water to keep us hydrated so that we could keep going.  Local running talent, Grant Johnson, came along to encourage the children and even kept Lewis from Year 6 going so that he eventually ran 5 miles!  After the event, we now have some children taking part in the park run and also some considering joining Walney Windcheaters and Striders.  We will announce our fundraising total soon!

Dick MacIntosh Trophy

Some excellent team work shown today and some strong performances, especially from Year 5s, showing promise for next year’s team!

Barrow School Swimming Gala

Mrs Meikle was really pleased with our swimming team today as they competed in the Barrow and District Schools Gala. Well done team!

Girls’ Knockout Trophy

Our girls were strong and organised and made it to the quarter finals.  Well done girls! Special mention goes to Katie who scored a lot of goals! Look out on the PE board for Jessica and Caitlyn’s report!

Sainsbury’s School Games Sports Day

The sun shone down on Greengate today as we competed in our annual Sports Day.  The school brass band played the team procession in with a tremendous rendition of to Eye of the Tiger, thanks to Mrs Wedgewood’s conducting!  Next 3SM and Mrs McLean provided our opening ceremony with an energetic dance.  The events were set up and run largely by our Year 6s, including putting up gazebos, pouring drinks and generally organising things.  A special mention must go to Josh who was a fantastic commentator and Jessica who took over during his events.  The scores this year were closer than ever! Well done to greens who won the girls’ team events and congratulations to blues, who won everything else; boys’ event, relay and the overall sports day.  A huge thank you must go to the huge crowd of parents and families who packed in to support the event.  Special thanks to the mums, dads and even the GRANDAD who competed in the parents’ race while scores were checked and verified.  What good sports!

Kidney Research fun run – October 2015!

The whole school took part in an hour long running event, dressed in their ‘purple’ outfits and we raised over £300 for Kidney Research UK!
